EXPRESSIVE ACTOR TRAINING:  EMBODIED CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

How do you develop a character?  Smart actors analyze scripts and make conscious choices about character background and scene objectives: but every character you play is expressed through your body, your voice, and your instincts.  So how do you access those instincts and integrate them with your intellectual choices?

“When the body learns new ways of moving and sounding it also learns new ways of thinking and feeling.”  - Michael Lugering, The Expressive Actor

Expressive Actor training is an integrated approach to movement, voice and actor training which provides a detailed and precise physical vocabulary of great practical use in character development.  Because meaning and understanding emerge from our visceral connection to our bodies this workshop begins with physical actions that provide a springboard for unlocking the entire acting process.

THE EXPRESSIVE CONTINUUM: EXPAND YOUR RANGE

If you have ever had trouble getting the character you imagine in your head to match the way it is expressed in rehearsal or performance then this workshop is for you.

Expressive Actions, the smallest units of human communication, simultaneously reveal thought/feeling through the voice & body and contain physical properties which are the essential building blocks of the actor’s craft. Exploration of the continuum on which those properties exist will increase an actor’s range of expression

This integrated approach to movement, voice and acting training also provides actors and directors with a detailed and precise physical vocabulary that makes the rehearsal process more fun and more effective.

THE TEN COMMANDEMENTS OF IMPROVISATION

Rules for becoming more spontaneous?  “Yes, let’s!” Some people are naturally witty and quick on their feet; others have a knack for keeping the scene on track and moving it forward.  It may be surprising to think that rules can help us become more spontaneous… the Ten Commandments of Improvisation provide a set of shared values, exercises and games that make it fun to practice living truthfully in the moment under imaginary circumstances.  This workshop introduces concepts and techniques that improve collaboration on scripted work as well as in improvisational situations.

FOUNDATIONS OF DIRECTING: ANALYSIS, COLLABORATION & EXPRESSION

This series of workshops provides aspiring and early career directors with tools for effective script analysis, conceptualization and pre-production preparation.  Exploration of the various phases of the rehearsal process includes strategies for ensemble building, staging, and character development, as well as facilitation of tech/dress rehearsals and preview performances.
